What is the Landscapes Review?
On 27th May 2018 the previous Environment Secretary Michael Gove launched a review into the nation’s National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). Nearly 70 years after National Parks and AONBs were first established, the review aims to ensure designated landscapes are fit for the future. Led by writer Julian Glover, the review has been exploring how access to these beloved landscapes can be improved, how those who live and work in them can be better supported, and their role in growing the rural economy.
Recently Julian Glover wrote to Michael Gove setting out in broad terms the findings of the review over the last year, what could be done better and what officials might start doing now to prepare to implement the review, should ministers decide to do so. The following day, July 16th, Michael Gove sent a positive response thanking Mr Glover and his team for their hard work and their analysis so far on what needs to change and can be done.
The complete report is due to be published this autumn, detailing formal recommendations for the AONBs and National Parks going forward.
