Chalk Streams and Wetland Meadows Project
“Chalk Streams and wetland meadows: guarding the irreplaceable for people and nature”
Chalk Streams and Wetland Meadows was an exciting 18 month project which ran from September 2021 until March 2023. The project, funded by the Government’s Green Recovery Challenge Fund, delivered a number of activities developed by the Chilterns Chalk Streams Project focussing on chalk streams and wetland habitats across the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Green Recovery Challenge Fund (GRCF) was a £40m short-term competitive fund to kick start environmental renewal whilst creating and retaining a range of jobs in England. The GRCF was open to environmental charities and their partners. This Government funding was distributed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Defra.
The work combined practical restoration with education and engagement projects. The Chilterns Conservation Board and the Chiltern Society, two key partners of the CCSP, worked together to deliver this exciting project.
Seeing great progress
The project achieved some fantastic results including completing the biggest river restoration project so far on the Hamble Brook, reaching more school children than ever before through its education programmes and improving access, signage and interpretation along the Chess Valley Walk.
