Cycling routes in the Ashridge Estate

The National Trust Ashridge Estate is a huge area of woodlands and downland, open to the public for free. It's a fantastic place for family cycling, with a variety of routes on quiet roads, tracks and bridleways through beautiful scenery. All routes start from the Visitor Centre where there are refreshments, toilets and open grassy areas.

There are 5 promoted cycling routes which take in the best parts of the Estate:

  1. Duncombe Terrace Route: short, flat linear ride, 5 miles (return), best suited to mountain bikes.
  2. Ashridge House Route: short, flat linear route, 6 miles (return), hard surfaces suitable for road bikes.
  3. Pitstone Windmill Route: undulating linear route with a steep section, 7 miles (return), best suited to mountain bikes.
  4. Aldbury Route: mostly off-road circular route, 4 miles, best suited to mountain bikes.
  5. Ashridge Circuit: long undulating scenic circular route, 17 miles, suitable for road bikes.

Full details and a map showing all the routes can be found in the leaflet below.

There is a cafe, toilets and bike racks at the Ashridge Estate visitor centre. Bike hire is not available.
