The High Wycombe chair industry is much depleted from its former heydey when there were more than 200 furniture makers in the area. However, craftsmen are still operating in Stewart Linford's factory which produces high quality bespoke furniture using traditional techniques. The Chiltern Society website has a number of images of the factory and the craftsmen at work.
High Wycombe's history of furniture making and tree cover inspired local artist, Susan Cunningham, to create these paintings which she entered in the 2008 Special Woods Art Competition. The paintings juxtapose High Wycombe's modern townscape with the ghosts of trees which used to be there.
In her work Susan investigates how trees may have existed around the 'Eden' shopping centre during different points in time. The paintings are a memory of what the land may have looked like before it was built on.
