"Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless this bed that I lay on."
These four Apostolic elms formerly stood along the high street of Great Missenden. No one is sure how they got their biblical names, but for many years they were an important local landmark, and many of Missenden's buildings and features appear to have been named after them, such as Elmtree Green.
The trees are, unfortunately, no longer present, but the spots where they stood can still be seen as dents in the footpath.
