In 2005, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Chiltern Hills becoming an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this Wild Service Tree was planted in Great Missenden.
The tree was planted by Sir John Johnson, Chair of the Chilterns Conservation Board, and the author Ian McEwan, who lives locally. At the event, Ian McEwan commented:
"It is simply miraculous that the Chilterns remains such a beautiful and unspoilt area, given that it is on the doorstep of one of the world's largest cities. I have known and loved this area since the late 1960s".
