Coppiced Field Maple

Coppiced Field Maple - photo by David Watson, project volunteer

This Field Maple lies on the intersection of the Icknield Way and a field boundary which is thought to sit upon an ancient river terrace. It is speculated that this field boundary is itself an ancient pathway which was lined by a Field Maple hedge.

This is one of the few surviving hedgerow Field Maples and is a substantial tree with a girth at ground level of more than 6 metres. It has been coppiced over the years and currently has four trunks.

Getting There

Park carefully showing consideration to local residents and keep to the public footpath while admiring this special tree.
