Commons are amongst the most characteristic features of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are 213 commons in the Chilterns, ranging from small pockets of land to large areas like Ashridge Common which cover many hectares. Commons have a long history in the community life of the Chilterns. Many remain today as important green spaces at the heart of Chiltern village life.
