Manor Farm in Bledlow wins 2006 Design Awards
Story date: 05/07/2006

There was tough competition for this year’s Chilterns Buildings Design Awards and the top prize has been given to Manor Farm in Bledlow, near Princes Risborough, owned by The Hon. Rupert Carington. It was one of 19 entries for the 2006 Awards, organised by the Chilterns Conservation Board and The Chiltern Society.

The judges were very impressed with the sympathetically-built extension to the existing traditional farmhouse at Manor Farm. They were particularly looking for the use of local materials and skilled craftsmanship and there was plenty on show. In addition to the extension a number of nearby barns have been converted into offices and workshops.

“The whole thing – office, farmhouse and workshops – now work together as a most wonderful entity,” said Richard Wheeler of the National Trust, chairman of the judging panel. “It looked absolutely wonderful, one of the most inspiring projects we saw.”

“I am delighted to have won this Award” said Rupert Carington. “Our architect and builders did a fantastic job and to receive this recognition is the icing on the cake.”

The Chilterns Buildings Design Awards are handed out every year in recognition of the best in new and restored buildings in the Chilterns. In addition to the overall winner two Highly Commended Awards were given out. One went to Crown Farm in Amersham for the re-building of an oak-framed barn that had been reduced to ashes by a freak fire. The second was given to Russell’s Farm Cottage at Rockwell End near Hambleden, Bucks for the restoration and extension of a 400 year-old cottage.
