Public to be consulted on traffic proposals
Story date: 17/11/2003

Proposals that aim to make the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty an even better place for living and leisure are to go to Public Exhibition in February.

The Chilterns Three Counties Transport Study being conducted by traffic planning consultant JMP for Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire County Councils will help to improve the current situation for vulnerable road and countryside users.

The Study has set out to identify key traffic and transport issues, for residents and visitors, in the northern area of the AONB bounded by Tring, Berkhamstead, Hemel Hempstead and Dunstable.

The overall strategy, which is evolving after an initial round of consultations with parish councils, seeks to enhance the role of walking, cycling, horse riding and public transport use, alongside identifying potential traffic management schemes to promote alternative travel modes and improve highway safety.

The Chilterns AONB Conservation Board and the National Trust are also actively involved in the consultation process.

The proposals, which are still being finalised with the three County Councils, include measures to address inappropriate speed and volume of traffic on certain roads, reduced speed limits in vulnerable areas, village gateways that promote greater safety of access, Quiet Lanes and Greenways which support the rural environment ethos and a public transport link to Whipsnade Wild Animal Park.

Public exhibitions, details of which will be given at a later date, will enable the local community to participate fully in the identification of problems and opportunities, as well as in the development of solutions.
