This veteran oak in Caversham has a ferocious neighbour; a dragon lying in guard at its base!
The tree was heavily pollarded in 2006, producing several very large pieces of wood, and the Emmer Green Residents' Association decided it was a great opportunity for some community art. In consultation with local children, a dragon was picked as the sculpture of choice. It was then designed and carved by local woodturner Andrew Noyes. The dragon has now become a bit of a local legend, and provides a great backdrop for local art displays and story-telling events.
There are still a number of large pieces of wood around the base of the oak, and the Resident's Association is hoping to convert more of these into interesting animals. The oak appears to have survived its pruning well, and is sprouting new growth.
