The beech, yew and holly woods of the Chilterns are a priority
habitat in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
Ancient woods are home to some special plants such as yellow
birdsnest, coralroot bittercress and a number of rare orchids.
Interesting mammals include various species of bats and the
rare Dormouse. These ancient woods are rich in wildlife adapted
to shady conditions.
Many species depend on dead and decaying wood for their survival:
fungi, insects and many other organisms help breakdown and recycle
wood.
Other species, such as butterflies, depend on light let in by
felling or death of old trees.
The woods provide nest sites for the successfully reintroduced
red kites.
