traffic projects back to traffic & transport
traffic projects | three counties rural transport project

A total of four projects have been established in the Chilterns to work closely with communities on solutions to traffic problems.

The two longest-established projects are the CountryWays Project in the area around Stoke Row in south Oxfordshire and the Central Chilterns project in the area between Tring, Berkhamsted, Chesham, Great Missenden and Wendover.

In partnership with parish councils a series of very well attended Design Days and Have Your Say Days have been organised in the CountryWays and Central Chilterns project areas. Local people were encouraged to give their views on a number of topics which included:
  • Revised and new speed limits
  • Quiet Lanes: a designated network of lanes with little traffic where drivers are encouraged to be more aware of walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
  • The design and use of signs
  • Village entry features such as gates
  • School zones
  • Natural feature management e.g. hedges, verges
There was strong support for many of the proposed solutions to traffic problems including the idea of Quiet Lanes.

The projects are now working with parish councils and amenity groups to implement a number of measures including:
  • Quiet Lane networks
  • Rural speed limits
  • Traditional road signs
  • Village entryways incorporating speed limits and features
  • A school zone
  • Working with local schools and safer routes to schools teams on school travel plans
  • Encouraging greater driver awareness of the needs of cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders
A further two projects have recently been established. The TRANQUIL Project is undertaking initial work in the area west of High Wycombe and around Princes Risborough. Public consultations have revealed similar concerns to communities in other project areas: amount of traffic on unsuitable roads and the speed of traffic on rural roads are at the top of the list of problems.

The Three Counties Rural Transport Project is covering the area south west of Dunstable around Whipsnade and the Ashridge Estate working in partnership with the highway authorities of Beds, Herts and Bucks, the National Trust and the Chilterns Conservation Board.
