JMP Consultants is conducting a study of rural transport and
traffic issues in the northern part of the Chilterns. The
project area is bounded by Tring, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead,
Luton
and Dunstable. Click

The area suffers from problems associated with increased vehicle use, which conflicts
with its special character as part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. The project aims to identify solutions that will reduce the negative
effects of traffic on communities and visitors to the area as well as promoting
walking, cycling and public transport use as realistic alternatives to using
the car.
The overall strategy, which is evolving after an initial round of consultations
with parish councils, seeks to enhance the role of walking, cycling, horse riding
and public transport use, alongside identifying potential traffic management
schemes to promote alternative travel modes and improve highway safety.
The proposals, which are still being finalised with the three County Councils,
include measures to address inappropriate speed and volume of traffic on certain
roads, reduced speed limits in vulnerable areas, village gateways that promote
greater safety of access, Quiet Lanes and Greenways which support the rural environment
ethos and a public transport link to Whipsnade Wild Animal Park.
The project is supported by the County Councils of Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire
and Hertfordshire, together with the Chilterns Conservation Board and The National
Trust.
