introduction
The Special Trees and Woods Project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This four and a half year
project was hosted by the Chiltern Woodlands Project, a registered charity. The project recorded Special
Trees and Woods throughout the Chilterns with the aim of promoting their cultural importance, with the land
owner's consent.
investigations
A team of registered volunteers helped the project, recording data such as tree measurements and photographs
as well as researching the stories behind the trees - such as when or why they were planted.

- A special tree or wood was highlighted by the general public or a landowner
- Trained volunteers researched the tree or wood, only with permission from the landowner
- Volunteers presented their findings to the Chiltern Woodlands Project
- Volunteers or the Chiltern Woodlands Project passed on findings to land owners on request
- The Chiltern Woodlands Project promoted the research - on the web, in newspapers and in project newsletters
- Promotional material regarding a special tree or wood was approved by the landowner prior to publication*
- In most cases anticipated visitors to special trees are few
- Visitors are asked to follow the countryside code
- Entries on the website can be amended or removed
*Sites vary, so details promoting special trees and woods differed from case to case in order to meet the
requirements of the landowner.
