Help celebrate
the Special Trees and Woods of the Chilterns

information for landowners

introduction

The Special Trees and Woods Project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This four and a half year project was hosted by the Chiltern Woodlands Project, a registered charity. The project recorded Special Trees and Woods throughout the Chilterns with the aim of promoting their cultural importance, with the land owner's consent.

investigations

A team of registered volunteers helped the project, recording data such as tree measurements and photographs as well as researching the stories behind the trees - such as when or why they were planted.

the process

  1. A special tree or wood was highlighted by the general public or a landowner
  2. Trained volunteers researched the tree or wood, only with permission from the landowner
  3. Volunteers presented their findings to the Chiltern Woodlands Project
  4. Volunteers or the Chiltern Woodlands Project passed on findings to land owners on request
  5. The Chiltern Woodlands Project promoted the research - on the web, in newspapers and in project newsletters
  6. Promotional material regarding a special tree or wood was approved by the landowner prior to publication*
  7. In most cases anticipated visitors to special trees are few
  8. Visitors are asked to follow the countryside code
  9. Entries on the website can be amended or removed
*Sites vary, so details promoting special trees and woods differed from case to case in order to meet the requirements of the landowner.
