information for landowners
introduction
The Special Trees and Woods Project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This three and a half year project is hosted by the Chiltern Woodlands Project, a registered charity. The project aims to record Special Trees and Woods throughout the Chilterns and to promote their cultural importance with the land owner’s consent.
investigations
A team of registered volunteers will be helping the project, recording data such as tree measurements and photographs as well as researching the stories behind the trees – such as when or why they were planted.
the process
- A special tree or wood maybe highlighted by the general public or a landowner.
- Trained volunteers will research the tree or wood, only with permission from the landowner
- Volunteers will present their findings to the Chiltern Woodlands Project
- Volunteers or The Chiltern Woodlands Project will pass on findings on request to land owners
- The Chiltern Woodlands Project will promote the research – on the web, in newspapers, parish newsletters etc.
- Any promotional material regarding a special tree or wood will be approved by the landowner prior to publication*
- In many cases anticipated visitors to special trees are few
- Visitors are asked to follow the countryside code
- Entries on the website can be amended or removed
*Sites vary, so details promoting special trees and woods will differ from case to case in order to meet the requirements of the landowner.
For example:
- A special tree in a private woodland is promoted as ‘You can visit this special tree by appointment only. Please contact Liz on x who will arrange a visit.’ A map is not provided with this listing.
- A special tree on private land near a public right of way is promoted as ‘This special tree can be seen from the footpath. The landowner has kindly agreed that visitors to this special tree can walk to the tree from the footpath. A map is provided with this listing.
case studies
The Special Trees and Woods Project has funds available for landowners to help with special tree or woodland management. Work funded by the project will be used as good practice case studies, providing guidance for other land managers.
