The magnificent red kite, a spectacular bird of prey distinguished by its russet red plumage and forked tail, is a very visible and well-loved feature of the mid and southern Chilterns. On these pages you can learn more about the red kite and its habits, see video clips of red kites from our nest watch project, read about the astonishing return of the red kite from extinction in England, find out where to see them and learn about how the Conservation Board is working to raise awareness of these wonderful birds.

Many of the photographs on these pages have been supplied free of charge by Gerry Whitlow. To see more of Gerry’s red kite images click here.
