a volunteer with one of our partner organisations. They run
volunteer work parties and surveys across the Chilterns, including
in the chalk stream valleys. Contact the following organisations
for further details of how to get involved:
report pollution
If you see evidence of pollution in a river, fish in distress
or other risks to river wildlife, call the Environment Agency
Emergency Hotline on 0800 807060. Calls are free and the hotline
is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please only use this
number to report emergencies, for general enquiries to the Agency,
call 08708 506506 during office hours.
save water
We can all help to conserve chalk streams and their special
wildlife by using less water in our homes and gardens. Even
small changes can make a huge difference if everyone takes part.
Try the following:
Fit a water-saving device into your toilet cistern –
saves up to 2 litres per flush
Collect rainwater for your garden in a water butt
Take a shower instead of a bath
Mend dripping taps – they can waste as much as 90
litres of water each week!
