It is easy to reach the Chilterns and to travel around it by public transport. Main rail lines from London (Euston, Kings Cross and Marylebone) and Birmingham serve 20 stations across the area. Journey times are 35-50 minutes from London and 90 minutes from Birmingham. There are regular bus services from London and Oxford, and local buses serve many of the attractions listed in here.
In addition, the London Underground Metropolitan Line reaches Amersham, Chesham and Little Chalfont.
rail to ramble walks
Cycling, walking or riding help get you fit and keep you healthy! Not using the car also helps to protect the Chilterns. There is no noise or pollution, wildlife isn’t killed and the roads are more attractive for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Local people and visitors value the peaceful rural character of the area.
The Chilterns Conservation Board has produced a range of Rail to Ramble Walks featuring scenic walks of 2-10 miles from railway stations in the Chilterns. There are walks starting from railway stations at Tring, Wendover, Henley-on-Thames, Bourne End, Seer Green, Beaconsfield, Saunderton and Harlington. These are downloadable from the Walks from Rail Stations page of the Activities section.
Buckinghamshire County Council have also produced a leaflet featuring seventeen walks in Buckinghamshire which are accessible by bus or train. ‘Walks in Buckinghamshire using Bus and Train Services’ can be downloaded here.
rider on call
A mixture of bus and taxi, the Rider on Call service runs scheduled services, but will pick you up as close as possible to where you live along the route for £3 return. It can also take a wheelchair or pushchair. This service operates around the Henley-on-Thames, Marlow and High Wycombe area, passing through many small villages in the Chilterns countryside. Tel 0845 082 0845 or visit www.rideroncall.co.uk.
chilterns rambler
A Chilterns Rambler bus operates on Sundays and Public Holidays from April to September, linking several visitor attractions and countryside sites between Hemel Hempstead and Tring. www.intalink.org.uk 0870 608 2 608.
An ‘Explorer’ ticket is valid on all Arriva and most other Bucks/Herts CC operated services and allows unlimited travel across much of Beds, Bucks and Herts. The Arriva Explorer is only £7 (£3.50 concessions) and allows up to 2 adults and 2 children to travel across the Arriva network.
